As the week comes to a close, we remember those who have lost their lives due to Hurricane Helene and the families and communities that have been devastated. We are thankful for all who have stepped up to help those in need, including our own teammates and students. Our hospitals across Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist have accepted more than 60 patients from western North Carolina and our teams are ensuring their physical, emotional and spiritual needs are being met.Our AirCare crews have transported more than 50 patients by helicopter and another 200 by ground ambulance to our hospitals and others across our region. The Piedmont Healthcare Preparedness Coalition, based out of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, is helping ensure the flow of resources and supplies. And, so many of our teammates and Wake Forest University School of Medicine students have collected donations for those in need.We know the road is long but we continue to stand firmly with our neighbors to support health, hope and healing for our region.

As we continue to see the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, our hearts are heavy for the loss of life and those whose lives are forever changed. We are incredibly grateful to all our faculty, teammates and students for their commitment to our patients, communities and each other.Since the weekend, we have partnered with the State of North Carolina on relief efforts and are taking in critically ill and injured patients from impacted hospitals on an ongoing basis. Many of these patients have been transported by our own AirCare teams. We know this will be a long process and we are committed to continuing to provide immediate and long-term support in coordination with federal, state and local partners.

I know I speak for many Advocate Health teammates when I share that our hearts are heavy as we witness the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. While our facilities in the Southeast experienced some minor disruptions, including power loss, leaksand delayed openings, we are grateful that most have been quickly addressed. However, our commitment extends far beyond our walls. We are currently working as part of a healthcare preparedness coalition with other health systems, lending our support to the hardest-hit areas – especially in western North Carolina – where entire towns are still submerged. Despite roadblocks and flooding from the storm, we have already evacuated over 70 patients (and counting) from impacted areas by ambulance, plane and helicopter and have transported them for care to our hospitals in Charlotte and Winston-Salem. We have also deployed our MED-1 advanced mobile hospital to the western part of the state and will be expanding our hospital at home program to provide critical and life-saving care for those who need it most. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones and the many who remain missing. We know the road to recovery will be long, but together, we stand ready to support our communities as they rebuild and heal.

As we continue to witness the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene and the aftermath of the storm, our hearts are heavy for the loss of life and the devastated communities. We are keeping those impacted top of mind and have initiated support. Our mobile medicine teams have made dozens of trips to transport patients and deliver supplies – via our Atrium Health MedCenter Air and Wake Forest Baptist AirCare air ambulance teams, as well as with our ambulances on the ground. We expect our MED-1 mobile hospital to be deployed to provide much-needed medical services in the disaster area. Additionally, Atrium Health Georgia EMS is assisting with search and rescue missions, transporting patients and answering emergency calls. WOMEN IN SPORTS MED 🏈 Fourth-year medical student Alexis LeMone recently completed a one-month clinical rotation with the Carolina Panthers as part of the NFL’s Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative.LeMone was one of 29 medical students selected nationwide to observe and participate in the care of National Football League (NFL) players, working directly with team physicians and athletic trainers.During the rotation, LeMone worked at the stadium, clinic, and operating room, assisting with direct care, sideline coverage, and follow-up evaluations. She credits the School of Medicine for preparing her through both education and hands-on learning experiences.“I’ve been fortunate to see this firsthand at both Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Of course, there will be unique challenges in pursuing a career in a male-dominated field, but don’t let that scare you! If sports medicine is something you’re passionate about, go for it. The culture is changing and evolving,” LeMone said.https://lnkd.in/eTQtkAGT
